Filed under: SyTy, Sy #1853 Rebuild

A great day to be outside! It’s 75 degrees and sunny here in San Diego - Hardly seems like February. Referring to the SyTy shop manual, I started pulling everything I could get at with the truck still sitting on the street. The plan is to haul the truck up to a friend’s shop, where we’ll finish extracting the engine, transmission, and transfer case. Since my friend (and his trailer) wasn’t available this weekend, I thought I’d get a head start.

Everything was going fine, until I got a call from my wife - While taking her aunt to a doctor’s appointment, they were rear-ended by a city bus! Fortunately, their injuries are apparently limited to bruises, and her Subaru Outback Sport suffered only minor damage to the rear end. The hit was hard enough to bend the driver’s seat frame, though…

So, in the end, I only got about 75% of the work done that I had planned to do, but I’m not complaining….

Here’s what I removed or disconnected:

  • Battery
  • Air cleaner and duct
  • Turbocharger air inlet elbow
  • Upper fan shroud
  • Fan, clutch, and pulley
  • Serpentine belt
  • Battery tray and vacuum tank
  • Drained the engine coolant
  • Transmission cooler lines from the radiator (the lower one was a PITA - I could only get an open end wrench on it, and turn it 1/8 of a turn at a time… Grrr…)
  • Upper and lower radiator hoses
  • Engine oil cooler lines from radiator
  • Heater and overflow hoses from radiator
  • Radiator (man, it looks dinky!)
  • Engine coolant reservoir

When you lay it all out, it seems like a lot, but there’s still a whole bunch of engine left in there…

These may take a while to load (like 5 minutes at 28.8k). I suggest you get a refreshing beverage or interact with your family while they do. Either that, or get a faster connection - hydration and families are overrated.

Here’s the obligatory "before" shot…

Battery and air intake removed…

Upper radiator hose, fan shroud, fan, and belts gone…

The radiator comes out… (In case you’re wondering, the object on the turbocharger inlet is a rubber glove, placed there to keep crap out of the turbo while I work around it)

No more radiator overflow tank or battery tray…

And here’s my dinky, beat up radiator. Seven, count ‘em, seven connections to undo…
